Christina’s scathing book about Joan portraying her as an abusive alcholic, Mommie Dearest, was published in 1978, a year after Joan’s death and two years after the star wrote Christina and Christopher out of her will. The 1981 movie version starring Faye Dunaway was a box office hit and the book a bestseller, but was discredited by Joan’s ex-husband, friends and twin daughters. “Our Mommie was the best mother anyone ever had,” said Catherine. Even rival Bette dismissed it as “trash”.
