HIPS AND KNEES

Doctors used to say that if you had a hip or knee replacement, you could expect it to last on average about 10 years. Great news! Advances in technology and surgery techniques in recent years mean most replacement hips and knees last much longer. In fact, a new review suggests 3 in 5 people get 25 years use out of their hip replacement and at least 7 in 10 have no problems for 25 years from a new knee.

SCREENING LOTTERY

Screening saves lives, yet there is huge variation between different parts of the country in the number of people taking it up. For many screening programmes, levels are lowest in London, but there’s no complacency elsewhere. About 4 in 10 people invited for bowel cancer screening, and nearly 3 in 10 invited for cervical screening didn’t attend. Don’t die of embarrassment – take up screening if you’re invited!

HIIT YOUR TARGET

I spend a lot of time recommending exercise for heart, bones, falls, mood and more. We’ve tended to concentrate on steady aerobic exercise – brisk walking, cycling, dancing. However ‘HIIT’ – High Intensity Interval Training – may actually be more effective in helping you shed excess pounds. It’s not suitable for everyone, especially if you have heart or lung disease, but it’s always good to have a choice.
