SUE’S GUIDE TO Staycation Insurance

-

If you’re having a staycation in the UK this year, don’t skimp on travel insurance. A big chunk of travel cover is medical, essential when travelling abroad. But falling ill in the UK means you get free treatment thanks to our amazing NHS, so travel insurance packs in lots of other benefits. Here’s what to check… Cancellation cover This bit pays out if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to illness, injury or bereavement. Check that the policy limits will cover the full cost of your trip. Read the small print – for example, if a relative who’s not coming with you gets ill, and you don’t want to leave them. Baggage

Cheaper policies may have limits of around £200 according to Defaqto, who research and rate insurance policies. Home policies usually have higher limits but you’ll need personal possessions or away-from-home cover. This is usually an add-on but will cover expensive things like cameras and phones. Adventure sports

This doesn’t mean you have to go bungee jumping or parachuting, but covers anything from horse riding to hiking. Some insurers like Columbus Direct cover up to 150 sports as standard, but check polices as you may need to pay more for some activities.

Disruption cover

Extras, like recouping the cost of tours or train tickets if you can’t go on your trip.

◆ Check the nuts and bolts of each policy as more than one in ten don’t include cancellation as standard.

◆ An annual policy will automatically cover you for UK trips.

◆ Check for Covid cover to find out if policies will pay out if you cancel because you’re ill or self isolating.

◆ Compare policies on COMPARETHEMARKET.COM and TRAVELSUPERMARKET.COM
