Jane was married three times, but was unable to have children thanks to a back street abortion when she was 18. In her first marriage the couple adopted three children, the second one from Britain. In 1955 Jane was instrumental in setting up the World Adoption International Fund, which organised adoptions from foreign countries by Americans. Her second husband, stage actor Roger Barrett, sadly died three months after their wedding in 1968. She went on to marry one final time, with the marriage lasting over 25 years. Life wasn’t always easy and after a drunk driving arrest, Jane gave up alcohol after struggling with it for many years. She died aged 89 and left behind a legacy as a movie goddess that endures to this day, although Jane herself never really understood why.
When asked why she had stopped making movies, Jane’s reply was down to earth and honest, “Because I got too old.”
