StephMcGovern
Daytime telly favourite Steph, 38, chats about being a mum, her new show and her love of discovering people’s stories
● In lockdown I filmed The StephShow from my house. I don’t think it’s properly hit me yet. Everything was so surreal – that just felt part of the surreal-ness. I didn’t want to miss out on being part of the momentum and the moment in history of creating TV in a totally different way.
● People always ask who my dream guest is. Rather than flying over Michelle Obama, which would be great, I’d rather find someone totally amazing that no-one’s heard of, like another Captain Tom Moore or Tony Foulds.
● I want Steph’sPacked Lunch to be very inclusive so it’s a melting pot of people. I’ve learned from all the different shows I’ve done that there are a lot of people out there who seem ordinary but have amazing tales to tell.
● I won Young Engineer for Britain when I was 19. That’s the reason I’m in the media, I suddenly became interesting. I was from a statistically poor part of the country and was winning a national award. I wouldn’t be where I am without the engineering and all the skills I’ve learned. Working in business and in a factory means I’m really comfortable reporting in factories. That’s where I’ve learned there are lots of characters out there that are an untapped resource.
● I’m very friend and family orientated. I’ve had a lot of my friends since I was little, so they’re a big part of my life. I have brilliantly ordinary friendships.
Steph’sPackedLunch is on weekdays at 12.30pm on Channel 4.
