A Highland Christmas

Escape northwards for the full seasonal snow-capped mountains experience!

-

The Scottish Highlands are the perfect staycation destination. With rugged landscapes, picturesque towns and just the right amount of snow, this is surely the perfect Christmas getaway.

At the heart of the region lies the city of Inverness. As the self-proclaimed Capital of the Highlands, the area has plenty to see and do.

Right in the centre stands Inverness Castle, the present building dating from 1836. Overlooking the River Ness, it towers over the city providing fantastic views of the area and beyond. A winter walk along the banks of the river is a must, and a trip to The Snow Goose for a festive meal afterwards is essential! Make sure to bag a table beside the fire – it’ll keep you warm on a cold winter’s day.

Just south of the city you’ll find one of Scotland’s most famous attractions – Loch Ness. Head for the nearby village of Dores and make your way along a stretch of the famous waters – the loch’s perimeter is 81 miles, which would take 5-7 days to walk around! While you search for the mythical Loch Ness Monster, don’t forget to admire the snow covered mountains that surround you.

Alternatively start your excursion in Drumnadrochit, where you’ll find the ruins of Urquhart Castle on the shores of the loch.

Further south, Aviemore should definitely be on your travel bucket list. Located within the Cairngorms National Park, there are snow-capped mountains here everywhere you turn. Why not try your hand at skiing with a thrilling lesson at the School of Snowsports in Aviemore? THESKISCHOOL.CO.UK

Animal lovers will spot snow buntings, hares and grouse in the area and if you’re lucky, you might even glimpse some wild reindeer.

If you long for a closer look at Santa’s best friends, then you can book a guided tour of the area with the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd. WWW.CAIRNGORMREINDEER.CO.UK

If you want to get your adrenaline really pumping, then why not go on a dog sled ride? Every January The Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain host their annual get-together when huskies and mushers meet in Aviemore.

Get to see these dogs up close and who knows, they may even let you have a ride!

It is said that once you’ve experienced the Scottish Highlands, you’ll never want to leave.
