What Is Happiness?

Some people think that to be happy, you must feel good all the time, but inevitably stuff happens and people have bad days. Real happiness is a state of mind. With the right attitude, it is possible to find happiness and contentmen­t, even in difficult circumstan­ces.

Happiness guru and author Mark Manson says, “Being genuinely happy actually requires you to go through a fair amount of pain and struggle. How you react to that pain and struggle will define your happiness.”

For example, solving ever yday problems builds confidence, helps you feel empowered and improves your wellbeing. Experts suggest breaking problems down into small tasks – they’ll seem more manageable, more achievable, and then you’ll start to feel better right away!

It’s also important to enjoy simple pleasures, such as time in the garden or countrysid­e, good company, growing plants or being creative.

Stop comparing yourself to others. This is a sure recipe for miser y. Life isn’t just about self-improvemen­t. Sometimes it’s about self-acceptance too. Know your strengths and stop focusing on your weaknesses.

Pay attention to how your thoughts affect your feelings and try to recognise and eliminate negative thought patterns that make you feel bad. There is always something better that you can focus on to make you feel good.

Adopt a “can do” attitude to problem solving, which will help build resilience and confidence, to help get you through challengin­g times.

Focus on the bright side – this leaves you thinking more clearly and feeling more empowered to make change.
