Home Comforts Creating a sleep sanctuary

Create an oasis of calm in your bedroom, and a cosy corner to escape from it all, with these easy tips and techniques

-

Making your bedroom a serene space using calming colour, soothing scents and cosy textiles is the best way to ensure sweet dreams. Colours such as soft greeny-blues, blush pink or neutrals will promote a sense of calm, while practical furniture with plenty of storage will keep the room clutter-free. “Preparing for bed by entering a messy and cluttered bedroom is far from relaxing,” comments Tempur sleep expert,

Suzy Reading. “By keeping your bedroom tidy, organised and clutter free, you’ll feel less distracted at bedtime and start your day positively with no frantic searching for things in the morning.

“Scale back on tech in the bedroom: just the sight of your laptop or phone, even if they’re switched off, can increase stress levels.

“The next step is to organise your bedroom and make sure it works for you. For example, if you have a constant pile of clothing waiting to be washed dumped in one corner, invest in a decent

sized laundry basket. Consider if there are any practical items that would make your life easier – perhaps an extrae hanging rail for winter r coats, a shoe rack to stop you hiding your shoes under the bed, a jewellery box to clear space on the dresser, some extra shelving or drawer space if things are piling on the chair.

“Everyone’s sleep sanctuary should be unique to them, so make sure you add your own stamp to your bedroom. Display items you love or that have true sentimental value, but don’t go overboard with too many items on display if you will find this overwhelming.

“Ideas to add personality without breaking the bank include investing in some cosy bed throws or scatter cushions in your favourite colours, buying some air purifying plants such as a Weeping Fig, Golden

Pothos or English Ivy and also by rearranging your furniture. It is amazing how refreshing these small adjustments to the room can feel.

“If you have trouble sleeping, tr y a lavenderscented pillow or room diffuser with the essential oil; with its delicate fragrance and calming properties, it will help you drift off to the land of nod.”
