What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Belgium? It’s got to be chocolate! Dating back to the 17th century, Belgian chocolate is just as popular today as it was then.

The central square of Brussels, known as the Grand Place, is where all chocolate lovers should venture. The cobbled streets in and around the square are lined with boutique Belgian chocolate shops – so much choice!

Stroll around the Grand Place and admire the Town Hall which has stood there since the 15th century. If you look carefully you’ll realise that the tower isn’t in the centre, meaning the left and right sides of the building aren’t identical. Legend has it that when the architect realised his mistake, he leapt from the top of the building to his death. People have reported seeing a ghostly figure haunting the square, so keep a lookout!

Meander through the narrow Belgian streets to Place de l’Agora and discover the Charles Buls Fountain, with a statue of the man who dedicated himself to preserving old Brussels. This is a great place to sit and devour the chocolates you’ve just purchased.

But chocolate isn’t Belgium’s only delicacy. You can’t visit without sampling their famous waffles. Los

Churros & Waffle is one of the most popular waffle hotspots in the city – pick your waffle and top it with anything you want. Whipped cream, strawberries and of course chocolate, you can’t go wrong.

As the largest consumer of chocolate in the world, Switzerland is full of chocoholics! Home to Lindt, Nestlé and Toblerone, it’s little wonder.

The Maison Cailler chocolate factory in Broc would make Willy Wonka himself jealous. Half museum and half factory, visitors can learn about the history of chocolate back to the Aztecs, and see how it’s made. There’s everything from traditional pralines to Choco Rocks in the gift shop!

Head northward to Bern and marvel at all the

chocolatey delights on offer. Stop in at Gelateria di Berna and sample their rich chocolate sorbet, or imaginative flavours such as raspberry and ginger.

Take a wander around the Old City. Frozen in time, this beautiful medieval town has buildings dating back to the 12th century and 6km of covered centuries-old arcades. Cross the crystal waters of the Aare to reach this historic site, and enjoy your chocolates in peace.
