ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? By Lucy Mangan

Souvenir Press. £16.99. HB

One of the greatest joys of reading is when you find a book that genuinely makes you howl with laughter and Lucy Mangan’s fabulous debut novel does just that. Written in diary style, readers get a hilarious insight into modern family life as Liz negotiates the highs and lows. Wife, mum of two, employee, friend… Liz has a perpetual struggle to stem the tidal wave of chaos that threatens to envelop her. All she wants is a quiet moment with her book and the cat, but everything from her work nemesis, known as Temporary Toddler-Boss, to the PTA powerhouse gets in her way.

The cast of characters are fantastic – especially five-year-old daughter, Evie, clearly destined for world domination. I also loved the small but beautifully crafted role of neighbour Mrs Bradley, whose conversation is sparing yet full of wisdom.

Fans of Lucy’s writing – she writes a regular column for Stylist magazine – will love the chance to soak up more of her trademark warmth, wit and unflinching honesty in what is hopefully the first of many novels. Entertaining, relatable and brilliantly observant.

POWER OF FRIENDSHIP WE ARE NOT LIKE THEM by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza

HQ. £14.99. HB

Riley and Jen have been best friends since early childhood, both assuming nothing could ever come between them. Jen is white and Riley is black – something that has never been an issue in all their years of friendship.

Then Jen’s husband, a white Philadelphia police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed black teenager and ever ything changes. For the first time, Jen and Riley find themselves on opposing sides of the fence as the community rises up in reaction to the horrifying event. Can their friendship survive?

The power ful words in the opening chapter set the scene for this incredibly thought-provoking novel that tackles a number of important issues. It charts the aftermath of the shooting through Jen and Riley’s ver y different perspectives. An emotional read about friendship, love, race and standing up for what you believe no matter the cost.
