LAKE DISTRICT, CUMBRIA
Known for its amazing lakes and landscapes, Cumbria is a great place for waterside walks, glorious fells and stunning views. My favourite lakes are Buttermere and Derwentwater, where you can do a circular walk around the waterside in a day.
The 10 mile walk round Derwentwater takes you past the Theatre on the Lake in Keswick, the John Ruskin Monument at Friar’s Cragg, and the National Trust Centenary Stone between Calf Close Bay and Broomhill Point. Raised wooden walkways are particularly charming, and there’s plenty of opportunity to admire the wildlife.
Buttermere is smaller than Derwentwater, so you can do the full circular walk in two or three hours. The route is 4.5 miles in length. There are a lot of nesting birds in the spring, including sandpipers and other water birds.
Buttermere has waterfalls, streams and abundant wildlife, all set against a backdrop of stunning mountainous scenery.
