Green And White

-

It’s easy to forget that green is also a colour but its many shades, and the texture and shape of leaves, add such variety to our gardens. Combine green with white and you create a calming space, a place to sit and relax with a book or a cup of tea and feel at peace.

I use hostas, ferns and grasses throughout my garden, either as a background to other plants or as features in their own right. The fronds of shuttlecock ferns look beautiful as they unfurl in spring with blue forget-me-nots frothing round their base. Spotted lungwort leaves make delightful ground cover in the woodland border, followed by variegated brunnera which has little blue flowers. White brings light into dingy corners, or really shines out in the evening garden when trumpets of Madonna lilies scent the air. For full sun there are white dahlias or the big daisy flowers of echinacea ‘White Swan’ along with white violas and rock roses for well-drained soil. Red or blue, yellow or white, you can create separate moods in different parts of your garden, making a colour-filled year to relax and enjoy.
