An emotional silent film legend Charlie Chaplin received a 12-minute standing ovation at the 44th Academy
Awards 50 years ago. He was given a
Lifetime
Achievement
Award and it was his first time back in the US for
20 years. “I can only say thank you for the honour of inviting me here, and you’re wonderful, sweet people.
Thank you,” he said in his speech.
