SUE’S GUIDE TO Saving At The Filling Station

- Consumer expert Sue Hayward’s savvy finance tips and advice

Fuel prices have hit record highs recently with a litre of petrol topping 159p, and 167p for diesel. It can feel like you’re filling up with liquid gold! So here are my tips on ways to save at the pump.

Fill up with the cheapest fuel and save up to 20p by signing up to PETROLPRICES.COM. This handy site flags up local prices when you pop in your postcode.

Forget “super fuel”. It costs around 10p a litre more but unless you’ve got a high performance engine, it’s money down the drain.

Supermarket filling stations are often cheaper than the big names like Esso and BP, and often run promotions, or you can cash in with loyalty cards. Morrisons often have quick flash deals. Shoppers were recently given vouchers for 7p off a litre of fuel when spending £40 or more in store. Using your Tesco Clubcard earns points at the pump, that can be cashed in on shopping or swapped for treats.

It’s worth paying with a debit or credit card that earns you cashback. Chase account pays 1% cashback on debit card spending for the first year and the American Express Platinum Cashback Everyday card pays 5% for the first three months, capped at £100.

Looking after your car can pay dividends. You might think shelling out on a regular service is an unnecessary expense, especially if money’s tight, but can mean troubleshooting problems before they get worse and check your motor runs as economically as it should.
