Must-see Castle Howard lies at the heart of the region and is instantly recognisable to fans of Bridgerton and Brideshead Revisited. Although the impressive stately home isn’t pet-friendly, my husband and I took turns to wander round the beautifully furnished rooms, learning about its history back to the late 17th century.
The glorious gardens, on the other hand, are dog friendly, filled with flower beds, ancient trees, sculptures, fountains and lakes, while the cafes also allow pooches at outdoor tables, where we enjoyed the estate’s own produce.
An excellent base for walking or cycling, you can download routes from WWW.CASTLEHOWARD.CO.UK. There is free parking, bike racks and no charge for admission to the Stable Courtyard, shops, cafes and garden centre. Holiday cottages offer the chance to be on hand for a yearround programme of events from concerts, wildlife walks and gin tasting to the annual Proms and fireworks held in August.
