It’s absolutely jam-packed full of stuff. There’s so much going on. I mean, it’s funny. I laughed out loud a lot. There’s stuff that made me cr y because there’s some romance and stuff you don’t expect. I suppose that’s what I also love about it… there’ll be stuff that the audience couldn’t possibly foresee.”

So spoke Mrs Patmore, actress Lesley Nichol, about the new movie, Down ton Abbey: A New Era. Her comments have piqued our excitement about the release of this year’s greatly anticipate­d film sequel even further. Romance? Tears? Shocks and surprises? What more could we want? Well, yes, amazing frocks of course, but that’s a given with our favourite ratings-busting period drama.

Although we have had to wait almost three years to see it, the film picks up the stor ylines of our beloved Crawley family and their downstairs staff, just nine months after the events of the first. We find Tom Branson and Lucy Smith heading towards the altar and most of the Crawley family setting off for the South of France, where to the great surprise of everyone, the

DDowager CCountesst hhas iinherited­hitd a villa. “Years ago, before you were born, I met a man…” she starts to explain to her intrigued family.

Meanwhile, “talkies” have now surpassed silent films, and there is a mix of dismay and excitement from above and below stairs as glamorous film stars and crew arrive to film at the family home. And… action!
