Caring For Grey Hair

-

Whether you do or you don’t ditch the dye, looking after your locks is vital. According to Anabel Kingsley, consultant trichologist at Philip Kingsley, “While grey hair differs from pigmented hair in that it lacks pigment cells, the underlying factors that keep all hair healthy and growing its best are the same.”

She suggests taking a holistic approach to hair care, eating a balanced diet and keeping your stress levels low, as well as using products to strengthen and moisturise your hair. And don’t forget your scalp. She says, “Care for your scalp like the skin on your face – your scalp is your hair’s support system.”

Silvina says using the right shampoo and conditioner consistently can make grey hair softer, shinier and stronger.

“The key is finding the perfect balance between texture (hydration) and achieving the ideal silver shade,” she explains. “When it comes to colour, silver hair can sometimes develop a yellowish tone, which is something we grey-haired people aim to avoid. To combat this, it’s advisable to use a shampoo containing purple/blue pigments to counteract any brassiness.”

Lack of pigment also makes your hair more susceptible to UV damage, so protect it in the sun, either with a hat or with a sun protection spray or mask.
