OTHER WAYS TO FEED YOUR MOUNTAIN FITNESS
MOUNTAIN BIKING: Great for general fitness, and accessible year-round in the UK. If you don’t have a bike, rental opportunities in popular destinations like Coed y Brenin, Wales and the Dalby Forest, Yorkshire is plentiful — and with a growing number of e-bikes for hire, it’s easy for all abilities to have a go. Mountain biking is also popular in ski resorts during the summer. britishcycling. org.uk/getintomountainbiking
CLIMBING: A good test of balance, strength, agility, proprioception and flexibility, climbing is, like skiing, a great social activity. With the inclusion of climbing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the sport has ballooned in popularity. You can hire kit and climb indoors or out, and if you’re keen on ski touring, the rope skills will be invaluable, too. ukclimbing.com
WATERSPORTS: Many pro skiers and snowboarders are accomplished surfers, wakesurfers and waterskiers. Jenny Jones, Emily Sarsfield, Chemmy Alcott and Glen Plake to name a few.
The sports use similar muscles for balance and technique and are more accessible than they used to be — surf schools and waterski/wakeboard academies have popped up around the UK as interest in the sports has grown. bwsw.org.uk
