TEAM GB ONES TO WATCH
IZZY ATKIN, FREESTYLE SKIING
One of the biggest hopes, Atkin took bronze at Pyeongchang in 2018 when she was just 19, Britain’s first-ever skiing medal at the Winter Olympics. Slopestyle is the British-American’s forte, as proved by her silver win at Aspen’s Winter X Games this year. Can she get gold in Beijing?
MILLIE KNIGHT, ALPINE SKIING
The 22-year-old from Canterbury lost most of her sight before she was seven but has taken British skiing by storm.
She was flagbearer for Sochi’s opening ceremony in 2014, age 15, took a gold in the 2017 World Championships, and two silvers and a bronze in Pyeongchang. She’s one of the country’s brightest stars for alpine skiing. Will she follow in teammate Menna Fitzpatrick’s footsteps by clinching gold in slalom?
GUS KENWORTHY, FREESTYLE SKIING
Born in Essex and raised in Colorado, the Anglo-American skier will hope to build on his success in Sochi. With a string of medals from the X Games and Dew Tour representing the USA, he won his first gold for GB at last year’s Ski World Cup in Calgary. He keeps busy off the slopes, too: as well as raising $250,000 (£180,000) to fight HIV/AIDS, he’s also a YouTuber and actor who starred in TV’s American Horror Story in 2019.
KATIE ORMEROD, SNOWBOARDING
Ormerod is Britain’s best shot at snowboarding glory, having taken a bronze at the Winter X Games in 2017, and landing a double cork 1080 (two full flips and one full spin) in 2016, the first woman in history to do so. A gold at Beijing will top a great 2019-20 season for Ormerod, in which she claimed five slopestyle medals — particularly as she cruelly missed out on a spot at Pyeongchang due to a heel injury.
DAVE RYDING, ALPINE SKIING
Appearing at what will be his fourth Winter Olympics, Ryding’s slalom story has something of an underdog quality to it: he finished 27th in Vancouver in 2010, rising to 17th in Sochi and ninth in Pyeongchang. The Lancashire-born athlete has fared better at World Cup events, as a runner-up in Oslo 2019 and taking third place at this year’s heats in Adelboden, Switzerland. Let’s see if British hopes of an alpine skiing medal rise with this star’s ascent.
