SWIM SAFETY TOP TIPS FOR COLD DIPS
BEGIN SLOWLY: Increase exposure and time spent in the water gradually.
KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS: Check tides and currents, and safe entry and exit points.
ALLOW ACCLIMATISATION: Give yourself a few minutes for ‘cold adaptation’, letting your breathing regulate.
ARRIVE WARM, LEAVE WARM: Dry off quickly, and have a hot drink and warm, dry clothes ready for after your swim.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY: Get out if you’re really uncomfortable or are shivering uncontrollably.
CONSIDER THE KIT: A wetsuit isn’t necessarily a must; swimming ‘skins’ (just a swimsuit) adds extra invigoration, but a neoprene cap, gloves and socks can help insulate vulnerable head, hands and feet.
