National Geographic Traveller (UK)
Editor’s letter
Iwas dragged up to the Peak District as a youngster on a regular basis. A 45-minute drive from suburban Nottingham took us high up into the heart of the UK’s first national park. Sometimes I enjoyed it, sometimes I rolled my teenage eyes as we hiked and cycled our way around a region I later came to recognise — having seen more of the world — as one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
With many of us discovering — or rediscovering — the UK’s national parks over the past two years, now seems like the perfect time to celebrate what’s on our doorstep. And as we dig a little deeper, it soon becomes clear that these national treasures are so much more than just beautiful backdrops for a good walk.
From coasteering on the Pembrokeshire Coast and wild camping in Dartmoor to watersports in Loch Lomond & the Trossachs, stargazing in the Yorkshire Dales and horse riding over the South Downs, the opportunities for adventure are many and varied.
They’re all a great excuse to get out into some of the most stunning landscapes the British Isles has to oer. And now spring — yes, spring — is finally upon us, it’s truly time to get outdoors again. Even if it takes a few years for some family members to appreciate it.
