Three Arctic birds to spot
KITTIWAKE
These grey-winged, yellowbeaked birds like to dwell on clifftops and ledges. Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls — the name ‘kittiwake’ is actually onomatopoeic.
PINK-FOOTED GOOSE
The small, short-necked, pink-footed geese breed mainly in east Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard. They migrate to northwestern Europe for the winter.
LITTLE AUK
Small, cute and black-andwhite, these monogamous seabirds can be seen on islands in the High Arctic and are the most numerous birds in the Svalbard archipelago.
