I’m on a tight budget, can you recommend any camping or glamping sites with great views?

- JAMES WARNER SMITH

The Huttopia group has around 50 campsites across Europe, but don’t be put off by the idea that it’s a ‘chain’. If you’re on a tight budget but still want decent facilities, it has a couple of great campsites in the Alps with plenty of space and a far-from-holiday-park feel.

Huttopia Bourg St Maurice, in the Isère Valley, is at the foot of the switchback road that leads up to Les Arcs, while Huttopia Vallouise, further south, is on a beautiful 3,940-ft high plateau with a riverside setting. The views from Vallousie, in particular, are spectacular, with the impressive peaks of the Pays de Ecrins towering across the river. Facilities include a heated outdoor pool, while insulated timber cabins feature wood burners and kitchens.

If you’re looking for somewhere independent, Camping Le Grand Champ, beneath the striking peak of Aiguille du Midi in the Mont Blanc Range, is my pick. Trees and terraces make the large site feel 10 times smaller, while the jagged, often snow-topped blocks of rock that dominate the horizon make it feel smaller still. The nearby hamlets of Les Houches have true Alpine charm, as well as a lake and castle ruins, and if the weather upsets your plans there’s also a decent indoor climbing wall down the road.

Huttopia Bourg St Maurice costs from £25, while Huttopia Vallouise costs from £15. Camping Le Grand Champ starts from £8. All prices per night for a pitch with two people. hipcamp.com
