I know I should feel sympathetic about the news that Ant and Dec’s dream homes in the Algarve are lying derelict after the property developer went bust. But actually it’s a fascinating insight into what the rich can be persuaded to spend their money on.

Both splashed nearly £2.5 million on the lavish villas, which were supposed to feature rooftop pools and cinema rooms. Pictures of the development, however, show houses built too close together with tiny outdoor pools full of stagnant water. It seems like a classic example of developers who got greedy and then couldn’t deliver.

Still, I hope the BGT duo get their money back, and then follow this simple bit of advice – only buy a house after it’s been built.
