WEEKEND TICK LIST: No trip to Cambridge would be complete without going punting on the River Cam. Rain or shine you’ll find boats competing for space as your guide steers you past the famous university colleges and delivers a potted history with a few funny tales thrown in.

For a closer look at the historic uni, visit one or two of the colleges, such as King’s with its magnificent chapel. For a fun way to explore the rest of the city, download a cycling map at camcycle.org.uk/ resources/map and head out on two wheels.

BITES AND BEVVIES: We kicked off our weekend with a tasty brunch at Old Bicycle Shop. Smashed avocado on toast was a purse-friendly £7.50 and the quirky former bike store has a great atmosphere, too.

For a more extravagant meal, we were impressed with Trinity, a stylish bistro with a laid-back, friendly vibe, despite its fancy menu. But we’d recommend skipping dessert and heading to Jack’s Gelato, where the ice creams are to die for.

For an early evening tipple, the roof terrace at The Varsity Hotel & Spa is the place to be. Enjoy the views of the city while working your way through the impressive cocktail list.

CATCH SOME ZEDS: As well as its fab rooftop bar, The Varsity Hotel has chic, modern rooms, two restaurants, a gym and a spa. A soak in the Jacuzzi, with views of the River Cam, followed by a 35-minute back massage (£40) is the perfect way to begin your Sunday. There are also yoga and Pilates classes that are free for guests. Bike hire is complimentary, and the Quayside, where you’ll find all the punting companies, is right on the doorstep. Rooms start at £155, see thevarsityhotel.co.uk.
