Kelly Brook on her recent weight gain and re-evaluating her life during lockdown

-

With her typically honest approach, model turned Heart Radio DJ Kelly Brook has no problem telling she’s put on a few pounds during lockdown by indulging in cakes. Haven’t we all?

But the 40-year-old insists she’s not letting it bother her as she can quickly lose the extra weight by getting back on the Slimfast diet.

“It’s a no brainer,” she says. “I love that you can eat up to six times a day because I’m a real foodie and enjoy cooking.”

Kelly slimmed down to a size 10-12 in 2018 after slowly gaining 2st and going up to a size 16.

She is isolating with her boyfriend of five years, Italian model Jeremy Parisi, 35, at her north London flat and the couple have been spending their time baking and drinking gin.

Kelly has also continued presenting her drivetime show on Heart Radio, which she’s loved doing from the comfort of her own home.

Here, Kel talks about working out, missing her manicurist and her plans for the future…

Hi Kelly! You say you’ve put on weight during lockdown…

I wasn’t at all surprised to see my weight creep up a little over the last few weeks. Life is full of ups and downs and the last few weeks have certainly been a rollercoaster for all of us. It’s been time to focus on and enjoy the good things in life close to home.

How much weight have you put on?

A few pounds, but I’m not worried. I know I can lean on the Slimfast 3.2.1. Plan to deal with my weight loss ups and downs, so I can get back on track. It’s easy and it works.

Slimfast’s statistics say 42 per cent of us have gained up to half a stone during lockdown. Do you think that’s because it’s been a stressful time or because of boredom?

I think it’s a bit of both. From my point of view, being home all the time is very different to my normal routine, which I’ve had to adapt to – from hosting my radio show from home to interactions with my colleagues and keeping spirits up. I can’t complain – I’m healthy and that’s been number one during this period.

Have you been exercising?

I tend to exercise at home and stay active. I’ve created a space to do Pilates, but I love getting out for a walk in the city, although I did get a little trampoline and give that a go in my garden recently. Oh, and kitchen dancing!

What are your guilty pleasures?

Cakes! We love to bake. Since we’ve been able to get hold of flour, we’ve been baking up a storm. Who doesn’t love cake?

We’ve been gifted time, despite the complexities of the outside world, so I’ve really zoned into that.

We’ve seen on Instagram that you’ve been cooking incredible meals. Have you always been a foodie?

I try to make my life as wholesome and healthy as possible. Our wellbeing is more important than ever. I eat well. I love cooking healthy, low-calorie meals and I’ve been experimenting and batch cooking soups and meals for the freezer, which I never usually have time to do.

Are there any foods you deny yourself?

Diets shouldn’t be about deprivation – they need to be sustainable, after all. The Slimfast plan helps me follow a healthy diet and enjoy a treat every now and then.

How have you found the experience of lockdown?

I’ve loved having the time to reflect and get round to doing those things I’ve been meaning to do for a while. But, like many of us, I’ve found it hard to not be able to interact with family and friends. It’s been so hard not to be able to see people face to face, but I love a good old Zoom chat. On the plus side, the thriving environment is amazing, so it’s good to focus on the positives.

What other things have you been doing to keep busy?

I’ve really enjoyed making my home space versatile for my working day and it’s really helped to keep me feeling energised and happy. You don’t need a lot of room, but creating different designated areas for activities, whether it’s making a coffee or having a stretch, is a nice way to make use of all your space. I’ve created different areas in my home dedicated to things I like to do, like a reading corner, a yoga space, a little coffee shop and a gin bar. When I feel organised in my living space it’s a total game changer and I’ve loved presenting my radio show overlooking my garden.

Has work kept you going?

Keeping the nation’s spirits up has kept me going. I love music. It’s uplifting and never fails to put a smile on my face. If I’m not presenting or listening to Heart, I like to make a soundtrack for my day to get me in the mood.

What have you missed most about normal life?

People – and my manicurist!

Ha! You’ve had such a long and varied career. Has the downtime made you think about your future work-wise?

I love my job at Heart. I have a ball and it presents new opportunities all the time. What more could I ask for?

And what about your personal life or where you see yourself in the future?

There are so many places I’d

‘I’VE CREATED A YOGA SPACE AND A GIN BAR AT HOME’

like to visit around the world and, more importantly, people I’d really like to spend more time with. Time out from your normal routine really helps you appreciate the important things in life. Rather than dwell on the things I can’t do, I’m keeping a list of everything I want to do in the near future. Gemma mccartney
