Megan Barton Hanson opens up about being financially stable, settling down and the challenge of breaking taboos

- Georgia TREVITT

What you see is what you get with Megan Barton Hanson, which is exactly why we love chatting to the former Love Island star. This week, we caught up with her as she’s back on our screens for MTV’S new dating show Celeb Ex In The City – a socially distanced spin-off of Ex On The Beach.

After splitting up with former girlfriend Chelcee Grimes, Megan previously vowed to never date a man again. However, she says she no longer has a preference and wouldn’t rule anything out. The reality star, who got together with Wes Nelson on Love Island and dated him for six months, adds that while she’s in no rush to settle down, she’d love to have babies in her future

– even if it means doing it alone.

Career-wise, Megan is smashing it. Having previously worked as a stripper and webcam girl before finding fame on TV, she’s now making a fortune on subscription service Onlyfans as one of the top 10 creators in the world. And it’s not just her pictures breaking the internet, as last month she caused a stir online when she shared bizarre messages from Scott Disick who demanded an apology from her over her treatment of Eyal Booker while they were on Love Island in 2018.

Sadly, questions about Scott are off limits, but here, Megan, 26, opens up about what she’s looking for in a potential partner, flirting with “stunning” Chloe Ferry and breaking down barriers when it comes to talking about sex…

Hi Megan! What are you looking for in a partner?

It’s about having a vibe with someone. It’s so hard to find someone you can literally just sit there, watch films and do nothing with. There are so many stunning people on Instagram and then you talk to them for two minutes and they’ve got the deadest chat. So it’s hard to find that.

Do you have a type?

I really don’t. When I started dating girls, I was like, “I want someone super feminine and super girlie with massive boobs and a big bum.” But then really I went for tomboys. So for me, it’s definitely about personality. You’ve got to be confident, funny and kind. Too many people put on a front that they’re not bothered, but I think someone who’s kind is really attractive.

What’s the most important thing to you in a relationship?

Loyalty and trust. And someone you can be yourself with on your worst days. It’s about feeling comfortable when you’re being a geek. Someone you can be your true, authentic self with is so important to me.

You shared some flirty banter with Chloe Ferry on Instagram last month. Is she your type?

I love Chloe. She’s hilarious and so stunning. But again, I don’t have a type and if we get on, we get on. But I wouldn’t say no!

You previously said you can see yourself settling down with a woman rather than a man. Is that still the case?

When my last relationship was with a woman, I was like, “Yep, I definitely want to date a woman.” I say these things, but I don’t know. I thought dating a woman was going to be so easy and that we were going to be on the same level, but with both sexes it’s really difficult. I think finding The One is really hard. It’s not really about the sex of the person, it’s more about if we have things in common. I’m not ruling anything out.

Are you ready to meet The One?

Yeah. It would be amazing to meet someone but, at the same time, I don’t want to put pressure on it. A lot of women, especially women of my age, panic and think they need to do certain things because society says they need to meet someone and have kids. Whereas I’m very comfortable and financially stable. If someone comes along, then someone comes along, but I’m in no rush.

Do you see marriage and children in your future, then?

Yeah. For a long time I thought I really needed someone to have a kid with, but now I’m so content with being by myself. As much as I’d love to meet someone and spend my life with them, if it got to the point where I was 30 and I really wanted a baby, I’d do it by myself. It’s not that hard. I think you have to realise there are other ways of having a kid. If I was going to do it with another woman, why would I not do it by myself if I’m in a good place?

What route would you go down?

I don’t know. It’s pretty far off but I really want to be a mum one day. Whether that’s adoption or something else, we’ll see.

You’re very successful on Onlyfans. Is it true you can make up to £800k a month?

I wish that was true! I’d be on a jet right now if that was the case. But it’s doing really well and I’m really proud. I did have a lot of backlash when I started it. People were saying, “Your 15 minutes is up,” or, “You’re going back to what you’re good at.” It was that kind of derogatory slut-shaming. It’s great to actually prove people wrong. I’m in the top 10 of the whole world.

Very impressive! Have you made any extravagant purchases with your earnings?

When I was younger, I used to be more materialistic and I’d love handbags, shoes and jewellery, but I’m pretty sensible and boring now. I just bought a house so that was the biggest purchase.

You’ve signed up for Celeb Ex In The City. Why did you want to do this show?

I just thought, “What have I got to lose?” I was up for some fun, so why not?

Are you nervous about any exes in particular turning up?

Seeing any ex is always going to be awkward, let alone when you’re on a date with someone else.

Wes Nelson has started a music career. Do you ever speak to him?

We hadn’t spoken for a while and then I heard he signed a record deal. Life’s too short, especially after this year. So I said on Instagram, “Congratulations for signing the music deal.” He’s done so well. It’s so hard to come from reality and try to make it in the music industry.

Is there anything else you’d love to do?

I’d just love to keep doing what I’m doing by talking so openly and making subjects less taboo.

Do you still get abuse when speaking openly?

It’s not even necessarily aimed at me, just women in general. People freak out when a woman says she likes sex. It’s so old-fashioned. I had sex with two guys on the show [Love Island] and men will do exactly the same and it’s not even questioned. I just want to continue to liberate women and allow them to feel free and do what they want.
