‘Kate can’t believe the position she’s in’
Kate Garraway has landed her own show – but a source tells new she’s sad her husband won’t fully get to see her success
Kate Garraway was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting, journalism and charity in the New Year Honours list, and 2022 is shaping up to be her busiest professional year yet.
Not only is the 54-year-old continuing to wake up the nation on Good Morning Britain, she’s also taking over her pal Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, and has recently filmed a follow-up to her National Television Award-winning documentary Finding Derek.
And while landing hosting duties on the ITV show is “a dream come true”, a source has told that her success is “bittersweet” as her husband, Derek Draper, is not able to see it fully.
“This is all of Kate’s dreams coming true, this is what she hoped would come from her doing I’m A Celebrity in 2019, but the pandemic happened and Derek then obviously got so ill,” our source said.
“Winning the NTA, taking over from Piers on Life Stories, it’s the most bittersweet thing because Derek is still not well.
“She is so strong, having to juggle caring for Derek and work. It’s very difficult because the kids are still young and having to deal with their dad being how he is, it’s very tough.”
Derek, 54, contracted Covid in March 2020 and spent more than a year in hospital while battling complications from the virus.
Since arriving home in April last year, former political advisor Derek continues to fight the devastating illness and his family – Kate and children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12 – are trying to cope with caring for him.
Our source added that Kate is long overdue her latest wave of professional success, explaining, “She works so hard, she has been through so much and she is so loved by the public.”
Kate’s new work will help her family remain financially stable. She has previously admitted that her regular income “stopped quite suddenly” when she took a break from work while Derek was in hospital, and that she had to rely on the financial support of friends for a time.
The source continued, “Kate is the sole breadwinner for the house now, and that comes with pressures. But she can’t believe she’s in the position she’s in work-wise, it’s just so sad Derek’s not well enough to fully see it because he is her biggest supporter.”
