Racing legend applies to build equestrian arena

-

HORSERACING legend Sir AP McCoy wants to build a new indoor equestrian exercise and training arena in Lambourn.

The application, lodged by his AP Enterprises company, is in respect of Lodge Down Stables, off the Baydon Road.

The current site already has 26 stable boxes, but a design and access statement prepared on the company’s behalf states: “Unfortunately, because of the very exposed location, this site is particularly prone to the affects of adverse weather which impacts upon the external activities related to the equestrian business.”

In a letter to planners, Sir AP McCoy has written: “There are many months during the year when [our training regime] has been disrupted due to the severe weather we’re exposed to at Lodge Down.”

At such times, he said, horses are unable to go to the outdoor arena for training due to high winds, rain, snow and frozen ground.

The letter adds: “While trying to beat the weather and continue with the daily routine, there has been a number of accidents in the outdoor arena where horses and jockeys have been injured due to weather.

“We are also hindered by no light early in the mornings.”

It concludes: “I hope, for the reasons outlined above, particularly for the safety of horse and rider, you will look favourably on our application to build an indoor arena.”

The design and access statement concludes: “This is the natural growth and development of the horse racing industry at Lodge Down Stables.”

Lambourn Parish Council has yet to consider the application in its advisory role.

The decision will be taken by West Berkshire Council planners.

Meanwhile, the application can be viewed in full, and commented upon, by visiting the planning section of West Berkshire Council’s website and using the reference 20/01234/COMIND.
