West Ilsley chapel e-petition launched

-

A PETITION has been launched to keep in place planters installed as a traffic-calming measure outside a historic West Ilsley building.

Last week, the Newbury Weekly News reported on the 60mph speed limit on the road outside The Old Chapel, a former Baptist chapel now a residential property owned by artist Simon Tarrant, which has concerned West Ilsley villagers.

In recent times, there have been a number of traffic incidents in the area, one of which caused structural damage to The Old Chapel.

In response, Mr Tarrant installed a set of planters around his home, hoping that this would protect the property against future collisions.

West Berkshire Council has said that these barriers must be removed as planners say that they limit pedestrian access.

The Old Chapel is located within an Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty and Mr Tarrant believes that any alternative measures would not be aesthetic.

He is now inviting members of the public to sign his e-petition, posted on the council’s website last Thursday. It will run until August 14 and already has more than 170 signatures.

It has been launched via the council’s e-petition service, which allows West Berkshire residents to express and seek redress for their grievances. To view and sign the document, visit https://bit.ly/3jXvxAV
