OLD MEMORIES REVIVED

AS gyms open up again after lockdown here is a photo of Northcroft Recreation Centre in 1978. It was a state-of-the-art facility, with the latest equipment and classes.

Keeping fit was not such a major industry back then as it is now. There had always been fads, starting probably with the simple hula-hoop, which sold 25m units in the first four months of being released in 1958.

In 1978, the treadmill first came into popular use and since then, crazes such as the Jane Fonda Workout (1982), Abdominizer (1988), Pilates (2000), Wii Fit

(2008) and Zumba (2012) have helped keep the population in shape.
