Wilkins is too hot to handle at West Berks

-

TWO in-form golfers overcame the tropical conditions over the weekend to win the men’s and ladies’ Saturday stableford competitions at West Berks.

Kevin Wilkins, continuing his impressive run of form since lockdown was lifted, won the men’s event with 40 points, winning on countback from Ian Miles. Chris Prior was third with 37. Meanwhile, Tina Mulford was also on fire, winning the ladies’ competition with 38 points from Jane Brackenbury with 33 and Gale McAuley with 31.

Carole Tancock won the ladies’ August midweek stableford with 39 points.

Renee Wheeler was a point behind in second place, while Babs Collyer was a further point back in third.

Dan Bowsher came out on top in the men’s midweek medal with a gross 82, nett 67.

He won on countback from Paul Reber who shot gross 78 for his nett 67 while Chris Prior with gross 84, nett 68, was third.

The first round of the Badger Trophy was won by Tony Coventry and Shaun Ponsford, who shot 60 on Sunday.

Nigel Day and Chris Prior were two shots behind in second place while Mike Wiggins and Jimmy Scott were third with 63.

However, the outcome of this tworound, better-ball medal competition is far from over as 16 pairs are within six shots of the leaders and a packed field close behind them will contest the second round to be played next Sunday.

Robin Land won the nine-hole Liddiard qualifier with a splendid 25 points while Christy Whelehan with 22 beat Colin Price on countback to take second.
