- GOLF

A RECORD number of players took part in Newbury & Crookham’s Captain’s Day on Saturday.

Club captain Keith Watson welcomed a total of 216 members in 54 teams of four to play a very challenging format of ‘Split Sixes’.

In the first six holes two out of the four scores counted, then three out of four for the next six and all scores counted in the final six holes.

Against a par score of 108 stableford points, the winning team was made up of Jason Burton, Mark Gallimore, Paul Ellis and Andrew de Burton, who knitted together nicely and played some amazing golf to win by three clear points with a score of 127.

The second-placed team of Carol and John Thorogood, Nick Randall and Craig Ward scored 124 and Steve Burton, Roger Williams, Tom Williams and James Dawes were third with 121.

The best gross on the par threes went to Kevin Rowe with 14 shots and the stableford prize over the same holes was won by Cilla Osgood with 13 points.

The best ‘all lady’ team was that of Jo Russ, Mandy Burton, Linda Hunt and

Penny Maughan with 118 points.

The youngest player was Teddy Devlin at 14 years of age and the team with 300 years of experience was Roy Belfield, Colin Povey, Tony Byng and Alan O’Donohue.

The nearest the pin and longest drive prizes were won by:

Ladies near pin on third: Norma Kirby

Ladies near pin on 17th: Cuthbert

Ladies long drive on 13th: Grieve

Men near pin on ninth: Tony Byng Men near pin on 15th: John Martin Men long drive on 7th: Charlie Gray

Many helpers made the day a huge success, from the starters who got the players out on time and bakers who contributed cakes for the refreshment stations around the course.

The event was even more successful as just a couple of months ago it was uncertain whether it would take place at all this year.

I The ladies August medal Silver Division was won with a nett score of 72 by Irene Witts from three players tied on net 73.

After countback Sue Beecroft was runner-up with Linda Hunt in third and Theo Farley in fourth.

The Bronze Division was won by Kerry Barlow, eight shots clear of her nearest competitor with a superb 66.

Judith Birch was runner-up with a nett 74.
