Council donates to Fair Close restaurant

-

NEWBURY Town Council has donated £1,250 to the Fair Close Centre to help with its appeal to build a more Covidsecure restaurant.

The team at Fair Close thanked Newbury mayor Elizabeth O’Keeffe for the donation when she dropped by the centre recently.

The money will be used to relaunch and develop the centre’s restaurant in a Covid-secure setting and enable it to continue to provide a vital seven-days-aweek service for the over-65s.

So far, £21,438 has been raised and all money donated will be match-funded by Greenham Trust through The Good Exchange platform.

James Wilcox, chief executive of Age Concern Newbury and District – which manages the Fair Close Centre – said: “We are very grateful for the town council’s support at this difficult time and the incredible support of Greenham Trust throughout the crisis has been transformational in the lives of many vulnerable elderly people in our community.”

Fair Close has also launched a separate fundraising appeal to

help cover some of the income it has lost as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

It wants to raise £37,500 to “help us to deliver nutritious hot meals on wheels alongside welfare support with the capacity to meet growing demand during the winter months”.

Launching the appeal, Fair Close said: “After seven difficult months with many staff furloughed and much income lost due to Covid, we need funds to support and strengthen the team at the Fair Close Centre to help us meet the challenges of an ageing

population left vulnerable by the crisis.”

Fair Close’s Covid funds appeal has been selected for Greenham Trust’s Christmas Double Matched Day.

This means that everyone who donates to the appeal via The Good Exchange platform on Double Matched Day – Friday, December 11 – will see their £1 donation become £3.
