Susie and Yasmin in front
NEWBURY AC continued their successful start to the cross country season with another victory for the senior women’s team and a secondplace finish for the senior men at the second Oxford Mail League fixture at Culham.
Susie Bush made it three wins in a row following her victories in the opening league fixture and the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Championships last month.
The Newbury team received a boost as Jess Franklin thrived in the tricky conditions to earn sixth place and Jane Mackey showed good form to finish 14th and give the A team a nine-point winning margin over Cirencester.
The club’s strength in depth was highlighted as the B team of Fiona Pocklington, Sarah Fowler and Marie Coultas finished 25th, 26th and 28th respectively with the team second in Division 2.
Geoff Anderson was first of the over60s to cross the line, with Wayne Lillis third in the over-40s and Daniel Tuttle third in the under-20s race.
The under-11s had got proceedings off to a good start with Izzy Fry producing her best finish to date in fourth spot, with the rapidlyimproving Holly Blower seventh. Henry Cox earned his best position to date of sixth in the boys’ race with Benji Fry also making the top 10. Sophie Fowler matched her opening run with fifth place in the under-17 women’s’ event, two places ahead of Charlotte Fowler.
Yasmin Ryder starred for Team Kennet as she staged a perfect finish to win the under-13 girls race in the second Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture at Abingdon’s Culham Park on Sunday.
She tucked in behind Oxford’s leading runner before taking over with 400 metres to go, opening a 10-second advantage to storm to the first win of her career.
The team finished second on the day with Georgina Bradford sixth, Charlie Estcourt eighth and Carys Cox 10th as Team Kennet retained their overall second spot.
Michael Randall was also second in the under-15-17 men’s race but that was enough to see him at the top.
