School’s test centre rises to the challenge
MORE than 7,000 Covid-19 tests were conducted by Kennet School as it prepared to reopen to all pupils in March.
Kennet assisted with the mass testing programme as part of the Government roadmap to easing lockdown and to maximise the safety of its school environment.
The school gym was transformed into a mass testing centre in January, affectionately known as ‘Kennet Nightingale’, and volunteers were recruited to staff it.
Guidance required three tests to be offered in school, followed by every pupil receiving home testing kits to maintain routine testing.
From the initial set-up to the last lateral flow test in the first week of March, Kennet administered more than 7,500 tests.
These were carried out over 41 days by 42 volunteers supporting more than 2,050 staff and pupils.
Although testing has concluded at school, with minimal disruption to lessons, Kennet has continued to support the Covid-19 testing further along with other protective measures.
More than 2,000 test kits were sent home with staff and pupils on March 12, equipping them with enough tests to complete
two a week until the Easter break and further distribution is planned.
Headteacher Gemma Piper said: “I am in awe of the entire Kennet community for their resilience, patience and determination, demonstrated on an
industrial scale.
“We really are #StrongerTogether and I thank each and every one from the bottom of my heart. I also couldn’t be more proud of how our pupils continue to respond to these challenging times.”
