Proper overnight parking facilities are not provided

-

ONCE again I see lorry drivers are being blamed for what is a problem caused by councils not providing overnight parking spaces with toilet facilities for lorry drivers (Newbury Weekly News, March 25).

We are, as usual, treated like second-class citizens, a nuisance, an inconvenience to the public.

The truth is we always will be until times of national crises and when the shelves become empty.

Long distance drivers are away from home all week, working 60-plus hours and living, working and sleeping in a tin box and for councillor Rob Chicken to suggest that a chemical toilet be provided on board really shows a lack of knowledge of the room in a truck cab and I would ask if he would work, eat, sleep in his toilet at home?

I very much doubt it.

As for councillor Benneyworth suggesting it’s owner drivers or single operators (same thing) leaving a mess, I find that an arrogant suggestion.

The problem lies with councils not providing adequate overnight parking facilities for the transport industry. We are essential for the lifeblood of this country.

If you eat it, wear it, drive it or live in it, it all came by road.

It’s time we were given the respect we deserve.

I’ve been on the road for 45 years, nothing’s changed and I don’t expect it ever will, but perhaps West Berkshire Council could lead the way and prove me wrong.
