THE leader of Newbury Town Council has cycled 500 miles across Scotland for Speakability, a charity dedicated to working with stroke victims.

Martin Colston managed to triple his target amount of £500, raising more than £1,500 for the charity.

Mr Colston started his journey in Inverness on September 16 and cycled through John O’Groats, Durness and then Applecross before heading east, back to Inverness.

He said: “What a trip! Wonderful scenery, more than my fair share of sunshine, random acts of kindness from camper van drivers, campsite managers and B&B owners.”

Mr Colston completed his cycle in a grand total of 35 hours and 45 minutes.

Carrying his luggage with him on his bicycle, he suffered from one puncture, a twisted chain and some broken gears, as well as constant heavy rain on the final day of his challenge.

He added: “I saw three stags, several deer, some highland cattle and two eagles. Glorious glens, stunning loughs, desolate moors, plenty of peaty, frothy rivers and burns and a few castles.

“Best of all, a total of £1,520 has been raised so far for Speakability, who help stroke victims recover the power of speech.

“Many thanks to all those who have already generously donated.”

The charity was chosen by Newbury mayor Billy Drummond (Lib Dem, Newbury Greenham) as a part of his ‘One in 100’ fundraising campaign.

Mr Drummond said: “What a tremendous amount of money Martin has raised for a local charity close to my heart.

“We all salute you, Martin!”
