Recycling centres now take Pringles tubes as part of new scheme launched by council

PRINGLES tubes and other paper food containers with metal ends are now being accepted for recycling at waste centres across the district.

This is part of a new scheme being launched by West Berkshire Council in association with Veolia UK and the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK).

An agreement has been made with ACE UK and packaging manufacturer Sonoco Consumer Products Europe to allow for the recycling of these select items.

Already this year, some waste centres in West Berkshire have begun to process plastic pots, tubes and trays, as well as small pieces of electronic equipment and drinks cartons.

Specialist banks accepting these containers can be found at the Newbury and Padworth Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), as well as the mini recycling centres at Waitrose, Newbury; Sainsbury’s Newbury; Station Car Park, Hungerford; the Kingsland Centre, Thatcham; Hillier Garden Centre, Hermitage and Willink Leisure Centre, Burghfield.

West Berkshire Council executive member for the environment Steve Ardagh-Walter (Con, Thatcham Colthrop and Crookham) said: “Previously paper containers with metal ends such as Pringles tubes could not be recycled through the council’s waste collections and we were keen to take this opportunity to include them.

“The residents of West Berkshire have always responded well to the different recycling initiatives we have introduced in recent years.

“We hope that they will take full advantage of this new service that comes just after Recycle Week 2021.”

Veolia general manager Sara Perry said: “We’ve been delighted by residents’ response to the recent introduction of the plastic pots, tubs and trays collection points.

“I am confident we’ll see residents of West Berkshire engage with this new scheme just as enthusiastically so we are happy to be able to support the initiative.”
