Music students at college get valuable industry insight

MUSIC technology students at Newbury College were treated to their first offline visit on Friday as guest speakers from WaterBear College of Music went in to share their experience and get students thinking about the wide range of roles in the UK music industry. Based in Brighton, WaterBear is a college of Falmouth University, a specialist higher education provider for the creative industries, offering a range of music degree and master’s courses designed for today’s musicians.

Demelza Mather, a session drummer for English rock band The Wytches, and

Tom Shrimpton, a backline technician with a master’s degree in music industry business, led the presentati­on with a brief history on how digital technology has changed the music industry and opened up new opportunit­ies for people with a variety of different skills. Music technology programme leader and practicing musician Matt Foster said: “This is a great opportunit­y for students to get some fantastic industry insight

from people who not only work in the industry, but also understand the progressio­n routes available.

“The students found real value in having this personal interactio­n with other profession­als, especially having the opportunit­y to ask questions and benefit from their experience.”
