Leacock pleased with Thatcham’s efforts

-

THATCHAM Town manager Jamie Leacock was relieved to see his side secure the three points on Saturday as they beat Chalfont St Peter 3-2 in the Isthmian League South Central.

Alex Miller and Lamin Ceesay put the Kingfishers 2-0 ahead after 15 minutes and Shane Cooper-Clark made it three just before the break.

Chalfont did score twice in the second half, but Thatcham held on for their second win of the season.

Leacock explained how significant it was for his side to secure the three points at the Stacatruc Stadium.

He said: “It was a much-needed result for us because we haven’t played for a couple of weeks, so I had taken that break to reflect on the early stages of the season.

“We released a number of players, we trained quite hard and we had some hard talks with the squad and after all that you need to get a result and fortunately we got that.

“We had frustration about not playing in a while and we wanted to react after the South Park game.”

Leacock was thrilled his side started the game so well and was delighted with the win after several changes to his squad.

He said: “The goals we scored were stuff that we have worked on the training ground and the boys were really good – I think the game was won in the first half.

“It probably didn’t help us in the second half because we dropped off and made it more difficult then it needed to be.

“We have trimmed the squad down so we’re not carrying as many numbers and the game after you do that, you want a positive result because it’s good for the group.

“Wins bring confidence and hopefully the boys can trust us with what we want to do.”

This Saturday, Thatcham entertain Sholing in the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

“You want to win as many games as you can and it takes a bit of pressure off you, but it will be a tough game against them,” said Leacock.

“They’re flying in their league, but there is less pressure because there are no points to win and lose.

“You can have a good run in the competition and we’ll be going out there to give it our best go.”

The Thatcham Youth squad have had mixed results in recent games.

They progressed in the Berks & Bucks competition after a 6-0 win over Windsor Harriers, but in the Allied Counties league they lost 8-1 away to Didcot.
