Double joy in London for Olivia
NEWBURY Judo Club’s Olivia Delahunty claimed gold and silver medals after recently competing in the C2 International Competition at UCL University in London.
Fighting in the u63kg U18 division, she started with a bye due to her seeding from her last competition.
Her first fight was against Isobel Cooper and she started well, scoring a wazari from a throw, following into a hold down to get the Ippon win.
Her next fight was the semi-final against Sophie MacMillan from Scotland, with Delahunty throwing her opponent for Ippon to put her in the final.
The final was against Millie Bayliss from Wales and she threw her for a wazari score and then controlled the final for the remainder of the contest to take gold.
She also entered the next age up (U21) for experience as she moves into this category at the end of next year.
Her first fight was against Evie Harvey-Jacobs from Rush Judo, which she won by a wazari throw and then an Ippon.
Next up was Lilly Harding from Tonbridge which was a tough fight, with Delahunty scoring a Wazari in the last 30 seconds of the contest.
Next was the semi-final where she fought Jasmine Teal from Bishop Stortford.
Towards the end of the contest, she won by strangling Jasmine for a submission and this placed her in the final against Hollie Devall from Wales.
Unfortunately she got caught by Devall and thrown for Ippon, but came away with a silver medal.
Delahunty’s coach Nicki Harris said: “It was another great outing from Olivia, producing a good showing in her Cadet division for gold and then gaining valuable experience in the older junior section and an unexpected, although deserved, silver in that category.”
