Junior splash

NINE records tumbled when Newbury Swimming Club’s new season splashed into action with the first round of the club’s Age Group Championsh­ips at Northcroft on Sunday.

Three of the records came from the developmen­t squads with Michaela Graterol Munoz setting a new alltime fastest in the 25 metres girls butterfly in a speedy 19.22 seconds. New records were also set in the male and female classes of the

50m sprinters’ butterfly with Ben Hutchins recording a time of 46.05 secs and Verity Osbourne 43.63 secs.

In the age group categories, Zara Ryan set new standards with a clean sweep of golds and records in all four events.

In her 100m individual medley she clocked 1 mins 09.68 secs, 2:50.41 in the 200m breaststro­ke, 2:13.47 in the 200m freestyle and 1:09.81 in the butterfly, all in the 13-year-olds category.

Amy McBride also impressed in claiming the silver medal in the 200m breaststro­ke in 3:03.16, which also bettered the previous record. Louise and James MacFadzen also had clean sweeps of golds and broke a record apiece, the former in the 15-year-olds’ 100m butterfly in 1:13.65 and her brother in the 12-year-olds’ 200m breaststro­ke in a time of 3:03.49.

There were four golds apiece for Millie Pope, Abigail Wood, Samantha Farquhar, Ajai Gill,

Will Butcher, Harry Willingale and Jake Jezzard.

Avani Gill won three golds in the 100m individual medley, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly, with Ellie Cowan taking the gold in the 200m breaststro­ke for the youngest of the girls’ age groups in 3:53.88. The same was true for Imogen Jones for 12-year-old girls, with Louise Barlow winning the 200m breaststro­ke in 3:30.53. Eleven-year-old Jack Tucker won two golds.

Ben Hutchins took the honours and both Molly Dummett an Jodan Hobbs won three golds to add to the success on the day.
