WEST BERKSHIRE TRAINING CONSORTIUM
ON Wednesday, October 6, West Berkshire Training Consortium’s apprentice graduates from the class of 2020 and 2021 were able to graduate in front of employers, family and friends.
The event at Arlington Arts Centre, near Newbury, saw graduates from the world of engineering, business, furniture making and others sectors formally celebrate their achievements.
“It was a joyous occasion,’ explained Matt Garvey, managing director of WBTC. “Laura Farris MP was our guest of honour and she gave an upbeat motivating graduate address which captured the optimism and excitement of the occasion.” Covid restrictions prevented the WBTC annual apprentice graduation in 2020 and it was over two-and-a-half years since the last ceremony. Consequently the opportunity to get back to celebrating apprenticeships this year was keenly grasped by so many people.
“After 18 months of upheaval and challenges it was so nice to simply celebrate the future by seeing apprentices graduate,” Matt added. “They are the future business leaders and employers and as we recover from a horrible pandemic, we shall look to our graduates to be the mentors of future generations of apprentices.”
As well as graduating 2020 and 2021 apprentice achievers, WBTC also launched its 100 Apprentice Challenge for
the year ahead, aimed at getting larger employers with unused apprentice levy funds to donate it to local smaller companies.
“Many big organisations are not aware they can donate up to 25 per cent of their unspent levy funds to smaller employers,” Matt said. “The booster effect of big local business supporting the smaller business community in this way is potentially huge. To this end we are looking to target levy paying businesses to pledge enough of their unused funds to support 100 new local apprenticeships. This is The WBTC 100 Apprentice Challenge for 2021-22.”
After the graduation ceremony the audience had a chance to see the Rising Stars 2021 winners. There were eight categories each supported by a local business sponsor. The winners were: Apprentice of the Year (16-18): Emily Richardson, JV Foods Apprentice of the Year (19+): Julie Blair, CIM

May,” Matt explained. “The whole thing was recorded for the audience to watch and then the winners and their sponsors came to the stage to celebrate. I am always in awe of the amazing apprentices, learners, mentors and employers that we work with and these awards showcase the very best. Well done to all of them.”

Apprentice graduate Brenda, from Dometic, said “Today is a celebration, we’ve gone through so much as a country and we had our challenges with the course but it was really worth it. It’s an amazing course, I’d recommend it to anyone.”
Another graduate, Lisa from Publica Group Support Ltd, said “I’m just really proud of everything I’ve done and everything I’ve accomplished, and I’m really excited to be here!”
Andy Murrill, editor of the Newbury Weekly News, which sponsors the Large Employer of the Year category, said: “Congratulations to a remarkable group of apprentices who have succeeded against such a challenging backdrop.” “Organising this event under these circumstances has been a new experience for all of us at WBTC. It was probably double the work of previous ceremonies,” added Matt. “However, it is all worth it, to see the fruits of the labour of apprentices and all those who support them is why WBTC exists. We’ll continue doing what we do for the local community and I look forward to celebrating the graduates of 2022 next year.”
