Former Kennet pupils celebrate a mini reunion
FORMER pupils of Kennet School celebrated their time in education with a reunion at the weekend.
The event was the group’s 14th reunion since it first formed in 2007.
Since then, the ex-pupils have enjoyed multiple celebrations to reminisce about the old days, along with helping Kennet School with its 50th anniversary. Thatcham mayor John
Boyd was in attendance for the reunion at the Stoney Lane school and said it was nice to be at the event, organised by David and Marion Canning.
There were around 13 attendees from the group, a relatively small gathering, due to some being unable to go due to illness or concerns about Covid. Mr Canning said that the low numbers “did not dampen the spirits of those who did make it”.
The group posed for photos after enjoying a buffet prepared by two pupils and a member of staff from the school.
They enjoyed food and some wine that was provided by members Chris and Janet Bryant.

Mr Boyd said: “As a former student, it was nice to go back for such an event.” Speaking not only as a mayor and former pupil, but as a teacher, Mr Boyd added: “Students at the time don’t always appreciate what they have got, but when they leave they develop a great love for the place.”
Speaking at the event, Mr Canning expressed his gratitude to all involved. He said: “There are some special thanks to make for which it would not be possible to have this little reunion.
“First to Mrs Piper and staff at Kennet School for use of school and facilities, and putting on this splendid buffet for us.
“The staff members helping
and not forgetting the two pupils.
“Mrs Jane Shadwell for making us a suitable sized cake and the caretaker, as always, who is so helpful setting up for us.”
The cake was cut by Kennet headteacher Gemma Piper and former teacher Mike Taylor.
Mr Taylor taught pottery at Kennet School from 1967 into the 1970s.
