Counties Test
THAMES VALLEY ABC’S Christopher Haines collected his Home Counties vest after producing a winning display in the ring in a match with the Western Counties at Luton’s Auction
House.
The 13-year old fought southpaw Jomel Cabilogan of Bristol’s Downend ABC and for once went in against a shorter opponent.
But he also had to cope with the left-hander and was able to slide away from the punches as the fighters sized up each other in the first round.
But the Thames Valley fighter began to pick his shots and he dominated the final round to highlight his development, especially under training that has been sponsored by Newbury company Tyre Bay, claiming the decision 8-9, 10-9, 14-12.
That was one of the Home Counties’ three wins in the match, but one of the two defeats was sustained by Chelsea Allen in her first senior bout as she prepares for December’s Female Championships.
She came up against Gloucester’s Christine Evans and was on the receiving end of a harsh decision, especially after punishing her opponent so much in the final round that Evans had to have her headguard re-set twice after having to take so many blows.
The Thames Valley girl conceded some weight and after a cautious opening round, Evans came out in the second but caused no damage and in the final round it was Allen who dominated.
Twice Evans might have been given a compulsory count, but instead the referee allowed the fight to continue and it was the Gloucester girl who was given the verdict by 11-6, 9-8, 11-9.
Thames Valley also had fighters in action on the Sturminster Newton ABC show at Gillingham in Dorset, where Aaron Iles conceded a little too much weight and was beaten by Weymouth’s Jack Barlow.
But Jake Kingham scored a solid win over the host club’s Steven Clark in a textbook display of hand-speed and movement that yielded the verdict by 9-3, 9-6, 3-3.
