COMMITMENT from the top of the organisation to building cultures of inclusion and tolerance has long been considered to make sound business sense.

Not only do well-engaged employees perform better in their roles, but employers are also more likely to attract and retain top talent with progressive leadership and management approaches.

The vision and will to become a more inclusive workplace are the first step to ensuring success however, leaders and managers require skills and confidence to be able to effectively drive and implement inclusive cultures and working practices.

Inclusion doesn’t just happen in HR departments; it requires leaders and team managers to embed and sustain meaningful change.

Recently a group of departmental managers from Newbury College and University Centre Newbury (UCN) undertook the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Bitesize Series in equality, diversity and inclusion.

These short programmes combine a blend of online study and group discussions and cover three themes of legal and organisational approaches, the role and responsibilities of the manager, and the development and implementation of plans and reports.

The programme was highly practical and enables participants to reflect throughout on their own experiences and how they can embed equality, diversity and inclusion within their departments going forward.

Marketing manager and participant Naomi Cripps said: “Studying the CMI Bitesize programme has provided useful insight and practical applications of skills within my role.

“It has been especially useful undertaking the programme as a team of managers, providing an opportunity to collaboratively reflect.”

CMI Bitesize is a practical and online learning experience, made up of a collection of short programmes aligned to key management and leadership topics relevant in today’s world – aimed at aspiring or practicing middle managers.

The programmes are designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge they need to support them in their current role and career progression.

Mapped against the CMI Professional Standards and

Level 5 qualification learning outcomes, this mix of practical tools, case studies, checklists, videos and real-world insights gives learners a better understanding of the topic.
