Town leave it late to progress
Hungerford edge past Welling in FA Trophy clash
TWO late goals for Hungerford Town saw them come from behind to beat Welling United 3-2 and progress to the third round of the FA Trophy, writes MARTYN LEACH.
The first real chance of the game came when Ryan Seager set up Chris Flood, but he drilled his shot just wide of the right-hand post with the goal gaping.
Welling were not without their threat and had a good chance when Che Krabbendam fired over Luke Cairney’s bar with a shot from about 12 yards out.
It was in first-half injury time when the goals came.
A wind-assisted corner from Krabbendam proved too tricky for Cairney and was converted by Ademola Shokunbi for Welling.
Hungerford, though, attacked straight from kick-off and Seager swept in the ball for the equaliser to see the scores leve at half-time.
However, Mason Saunders-Henry put the Wings 2-1 up on the hour mark.
Hungerford pushed for the equaliser and Sol Wanjau-Smith,
who had replaced Louis McGrory, won a penalty after being brought down in the box.
Top scorer Seager stepped up but was denied from the spot by a good save from Jack Sims.
Hungerford, pushing forward, urged on by Callum Willmoth’s barking captaincy, waited until the last 10 minutes to find the equaliser,
when George Smith smashed in a free-kick that was hit into the box by Cairney from the halfway line.
Then, with only a few minutes to go, Rhys Tyler spotted the keeper off his line from the right side of the box and bent a shot into the top corner for the winner.
Hungerford’s reward is a home tie against Weymouth on December 18.
