Hungerford make kind gesture

-

HUNGERFORD FC have been thanked for their ‘great gesture’ after they presented St Alban’s City goalkeeper with a new Inter Milan towel to replace the lucky one that was taken.

Keeper Michael Johnson left the towel on the pitch after his team’s 3-2 FA Cup victory over Forest Green Rovers and thinks it may have been taken by a fan as a keepsake.

St Albans had been on a 15-game unbeaten run since he first started using it – and Johnson was convinced the towel was the reason.

And it appears it was more than just superstition – in his first game without it he came off injured after 23 minutes and his side ended up losing 4-3 to Dulwich Hamlet.

When the team at Hungerford Town heard the news, they decided to contact the Italian giants to see if there was anything they could do.

And to their surprise, the 19-time Serie A champions not only responded, but shipped one out the following day to make sure it arrived in time for their recent National

League South match.

Although Johnson was still sidelined through injury, Hungerford FC goalkeeper Luke Cairney presented it to him before the game.

Afterwards, Johnson tweeted: “Great gesture and great people. Thanks and have a great season.”

Hungerford FC chairman Patrick Chambers said: “Our media team saw that Michael Johnson had sadly lost his treasured lucky Inter Milan towel and suggested that it would be a nice gesture for Hungerford Town to source a replacement and present it to him at our fixture with St Albans.

“My wife Nicky [commercial manager] contacted Inter Milan and after several calls managed to purchase the towel and arrange urgent delivery.

“From all at Hungerford Town we wish Michael a speedy recovery.”
