St Mary’s seal points after comeback

ST Mary’s B came from behind to beat Bucklebury A by six rubbers to three in the mixed league of the Newbury & District Badminton League.

The match started off fairly close, but clinical play from St Mary’s saw them over the line.

Graham won all three of their rubbers for Saints and they were supported by two from Suzanne Allen and Pete Braithwait­e and one from Jessica Wheway and Chris Williams.

Cara Brims and John Holloway won two rubbers and Olivia May and Andy Mcdonald one rubber for Bucklebury.

In the Open League Division 1, St Mary’s A entertaine­d Hurst A. Despite the best efforts of David Irvine and Pete Bevell (Hurst), who won one and lost two close three-enders, St Mary’s ran out winners by eight rubbers to one. Lee Frith and Ross Parsons and Martin Graham and Gareth Jones each kept clean sheets for St Mary’s and they were supported by Matt Benians and Michael Nash.

Andover visited Newbury A and started off very well, winning three out of the first four rubbers thanks to Steve Trussell and

Chris Clarke winning their first two.

Newbury then stepped up a gear, winning the remaining five rubbers to win the match by six rubbers to three.

Newbury’s Suzy Mugford and Pedro Cosa won their three rubbers with Simon Jukes and Dinesh Raja providing another two.

In the Open Division 2, Bucklebury A travelled to play Kennet A.

Bucklebury started strongly by winning the first five rubbers, before Kennet finally got on the score board, but Bucklebury won by six rubbers to three.

Alan Arnold and John Holloway picked up three wins for Bucklebury, supported by two from Colin Shurey and Alan Mcdonald and one from David Haines and Stuart May.

Keith Watts and Graham Woodrow won two of Kennet’s rubbers.

With five of the rubbers going to three ends, one would have expected the match result between Shaw B and Aldermasto­n to have been close, but the latter were clincal and won 8-1.

Paul Olive and Oli Terry won one and lost two of their close threeender­s to gain Shaw’s consolatio­n rubber, while Neil Hince and William Belfield and Chris

Apsey and Geoff Wilkinson kept clean sheets for Aldermasto­n, supported by two rubbers for Rodney Booth and Jos Hunter. In the Open Division 3, Newbury C ran out convincing 9-0 winners over Bucklebury B.

Newbury’s winning team comprised Duncan Somerville, Chris Head, Jairajesh, Mark Randolph, Callum Somerville and Ted Jones.
